Amitié/Friendship:
An Investigation into Cross-Cultural Styles in Canada and the United States
J. Barry Gurdin, Ph.D.

Dr. Gurdin's Amitié/Friendship is an original introduction to the social phenomenology and clinical sociology of friendship. Using Montreal as a microcosm from which to draw a broader perspective on the influence of ethnicity, gender, class, marital status and age on the nuances in configurations of friendship, and comparing his findings in Canada to his own and others' research conducted in the United States and France, Dr. Gurdin has drawn a thought-provoking portrait of friendship.

J. Barry Gurdin received his doctorate in sociology from the Université de Montréal. His thorough knowledge of both cultures and languages brings a unique perspective to his study.

What is a friend? Who is a friend? What does friendship mean within and across social and ethnic groups? What are the real problems hindering relationships between different groups, and how can we facilitate understanding, tolerance, and friendship? These are some of the questions analyzed in this timely book, which provides a rich contribution to current sociological, psychological and cross-cultural studies.

A Northwestern University Ph.D. in Sociology, David Schroder, describes Amitié/Friendship in a recent review,

"This book is a landmark, contemporary, comparative study of friendship. It is certainly the most outstanding work on this social form for our generation. It is a must-read for scholars of friendship and social networks, and a highly readable presentation for any social scientist or interested general reader."1
